Paul Scally on Agents

Postby CadburyMan » Wed Apr 07, 2021 9:31 am

Interesting to read Paul Scally's views on agents in the Guardian and I have to say that I pretty well agree with him. Jusy why should a club pay the player's agent; surely this is down to the player to resolve. When you buy a house you don't pay the estatate agent - the seller does

Would be interested to know other people's views on the matter

Over here in the US it's complicated, depending on if your a player, a good player ,a great player or the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Times) , most of the top agents with good players on their books in the world of Football, Soccer, Baseball , Hockey (Ice hockey ) and Basketball are multi millionaires, Scott Boras is personally worth a $100 Million, and seems more powerful than the Commissioners of some of the Leagues, although he does have a habit of saying the stupidest things whenever he gets in front of a mic.
It used to be that the players paid the agent out of the salary the agent negotiated with the new club, normally between 5% and 10% of the players salary, which was tax deductable from the players Income over the period of the contract . It could be deducted from Federal (The whole country) and State Taxes which are all at different rates ,and depend mainly on if the State is rich or poor, or in the case of Illinois and a couple of others BROKE, which is why we pay the highest income tax in the US .
Then the problem arouse , some States like Texas, Florida,Nevada, Tennessee and a few others DON'T have State income Tax so guess where everyone wanted to play ,.........in States with no Income Tax, lol.
Then in the world of Ice Hockey, Baseball, Soccer and Basketball, there are teams in Canada ,where there taxed through the roof ,so no one from the US wanted to go there to play, so they struggled for years (except hockey the Canadians are about the best in the world at ice hockey, they didn't need US players ), lol.
Nowadays in most cases the club the player is moving to pays the agent the 5% -10% of the players salary, BUT and it's a BIG BUTT, the club can get tax relief on the players salary and the agents fees, in the tax world it seems to come under the term " BENEFITS ".
In Hockey,Baseball, Soccer and Basketball a team has to honor the players contract ,so if you sign a player for 1 or 3 or 5 years and he turns out to be a bust and he never plays you still have to pay him,but in Football you can cut a guy at any time and that's the end of the contract, so the agent only gets a percent of the time the guy was getting paid, which is why agents like Scott Boras have pushed over the last few years to get guaranteed money built into the contract, so a team signs Mr Garawa for 5 years for $120 million, the agents now insist the player gets say 50 million guaranteed money"up front
Goff the QB of the LA Rams got a $27 Million a year contract ( $134 million 5 year deal after his first contract ran out (2016-2021) with $110 GUARANTEED ), which is just crazy, then a few weeks later they let him go in a deal of swapped QB's with Detroit, so Detroit get that contract whether they like it or not, and the agent gets more money from doing the deal, lol.
