Another win and three more points today for a Gillingham team who are now well and truly encamped in third place in the First Division, just two point outside of an automatic promotion spot thanks to an easy 2-0 win against an Accrington Stanley , a side who seems to have taken there foot off the gas now that the bottom three have already been decided (or is it two this year with Bury going out of the league) ?
The game played before a full house at Priestfield Stadium on a beautiful 60 degree Spring Day proved once and for all what the smart, intelligent , Gillingham supporters always believed, that Steve Evans the Gillingham Manager was the man to lead the Gills to the promised land, and has he got this team playing well enough to take an automatic spot next Friday when they play a Coventry side who have been in free fall since the middle of March.
A penalty converted by the man who was fouled Lee, gave the Gills an well deserved half time lead and a simple tap in goal a few minutes after the restart by Charles -Cook gave the manager enough time to substitute three players in the 70th 75th and 80th minutes, and bring on the fans favorites , keeper Ron Hillyard, prolific goal scorer Brian Yeo, and although the leg shackles hindered his strait line running Marlon King did make some quick darting runs from the wing towards the locker room every time the ref blew his whistle.
I must admit and I said this to the lovely lady sitting next to me that's a strange sounding whistle, sounds like something from that old Police show, Dixon of Dock Green, but she didn't seem to be amused , said how old do you think I am , and turned her back to me . It didn't prove to be the best day for the poor woman, as the teams came back on the pitch after half time, her husband jumped up and ran towards the Gills dug out throwing rose petals at Steve Evans feet and was escorted out of the ground and into a police car for a trip to Gillingham police Station.
I said to the poor distressed woman was that you husband, and she said yes,and to think this time last week he was in Milton Keynes bailing out a Gillingham supporter who had started a riot there, now I am going to have to bail him out, what is happening to our supporters, there going crazy.
After the game I said can I give you a lift to the police station and she was very grateful for the offer, I can only assume she thought I had a car, although to be honest I would have thought the bike clips on me trousers would have led her to believe otherwise.
I thought Gillingham Police Station was still around the corner from the railway station in West Street but it has moved down to near the Gillingham Dockyard Gate, and the dear lady seemed OK sitting on my all aluminum retractable rear bike rack, well at least for the first mile, but that all changed when we got to the top of the hill on Church Street overlooking the River Medway .
I can tell you for nothing that your Roving Reporter Scoop Stevens does not appreciate his hair being pulled like that, how I was supposed to see looking at the sky I have no idea, and that screaming in my ear was very unnecessary, lot of fuss for nothing in my opinion, the Strand looks nice at this time of year and if the drop from the promenade to the beach had not stopped us it would not have mattered, the tide was out anyway.
She might have looked very pretty but I feel sorry for her husband, jjjeezzz what a temper, didn't even hang around long enough to help me straighten out my wonky front wheel, and to throw stones at me as she stormed away seemed a wee bit unnecessary, hell it wasn't me that got locked up for expressing my love and thanks to Steve Evans.
Anyway as soon as this wheel has been beaten back into shape your Intrepid Roving Reporter Scoop Stevens will once again be heading north for Fridays game against a Sky Blue team who are in free fall after a wonderful start to the season , (where the hell do they play now days) looking forward to another three points and with only four to go after Coventry a place in the play offs if not an auto finish seems certain.
