Our problems solved.

Postby gillsfan1066 » Thu Oct 03, 2019 2:01 pm

Simple ,we just follow RZ Pellets WAC's example. Founded in 1931 as Wolfsberger AC ,they did nothing for years and years in the Austrian (throw another shrimp on the barbie) Lower Divisions, then in 2007 they joined with SK St. Andra a team a bit like Maidstone, or Dover, used the same management, same offices, got promoted in 2011/2012, to the Austrian equivalent of the Premier Division and this year finished third and today are playing Roma in the Europa League, and all done in a stadium which holds 7,300 fans.
Of course they dumped poor old SK St Andra as soon as they got into the Austrian Bundesliga, but hey ho, there you go, I got mine you get yours, lol.
Now my question is, if say Gallagher, The Saga Group, or say P&O Ferries came to you and said If you change the name of GFC to say Saga Group FC ,we will plow millions into the team, would you happily do it,or does the name GFC mean that much to you ??

I would question the validity of the offer if the name change was that important. For a start, football sponsorship is so whimsical that it changes every other season. The next investors wouldn't want a name that was irrelevant or referred to another company so also would want it changed. Another new badge, another new name and a loss of identity. There is also the issue of history. I would say what makes our teams so great is the history behind the team, where they have come from and what they represent. Losing that gives you a brand without an obvious history and that makes it less marketable and the reason for the change would be lost. If I said Hereford, everyone remembers their win over Newcastle in the FA Cup.

So no, I wouldn't support a name change even though we have had one as, in England especially, it is the name that means more than the club.

Hereford a team that went bankrupt and played Newcastle in 1972, hahaha, that was like 50 years ago, hell I bet half the people that go to Gills games wee not even born then and the other half who were are now suffering from " Old Timers Disease" and have forgotten the game . Gillingham GREAT, oh dear thats a stretch, come on Big G there not great , never have been in a 100+ years. It's 2019 almost 2020, not 1972 , are you still driving an Austin 1100 with an H registration and is the average laborers wage in England around $32 quid a week ??
Just think a few short years ago we were playing Brighton, there sponsorship deals this year are worth over 3.5 million pounds , our last sponsorship deal with Medway City Council didn't get us a single penny, we got to use the park district facilities for free, wwoooww hhoo ,who drove that hard bargain on behalf of THE GILLS, lol. Just out of interest Arsenals sponsorship deals are worth over SIXTY MILLION pounds a year. Stadium naming does not bring much into the coffers, most seem to change sponsors fairly regularly, mainly because people who go to Gillingham games will always call Priestfield Stadium ,Priestfield ,even when it's been re-christened DUREX STADIUM, where every seat is covered in ribbed rubber for pure comfort and safety.
The year 2020 is just around the corner,NOW is the time for Gillingham FC to become leaders in the field of soccer in the UK, a ten year sponsorship deal with Red Bull or P&O Ferries (there profits were up 22% last year) to rename GFC, RED BULL UNITED or P&O FERRIES ALBION (by the way an Albion is an old english word for Briton or white, eg The White Cliffs of Dover ) , lets say for a measly 100 million spread over 10 years, payable in say three instalments, year one, year three and year five, don't tell me even Evans could not buy us our way into the top half of the Championship Division
Times are changing it's not like the name Gillingham Football Club has done us a lot of good over the last hundred and whatever years, bit like saying the Luck of the Irish, jezz talk about an unlucky nation, so maybe a change of name to Coca Cola Rovers might change our luck , assuming Scally doesn't pocket 95% of the money that is, lol ??

4 things Gillsfan. Firstly," throw another shrimp on the barbie" is Australian not Austrian.
Secondly, Durex is in everyday use in Australia. It's sticky tape. You buy it everywhere, kids use it and call it by name without any connotations.
Thirdly, there's nothing wrong with a Morris 1100. I learnt to drive in one and passed my test in one.
Now fourthly, getting serious, the Gills should never change their name unless it became something like Medway to unite the towns. Never for a sponsor. If they built a 30,000 stadium more central to all the towns, got a billionaire benefactor and sensibly rebuilt the team I think success would be a given. Aren't there any rich people locally who could take pride in the club? I reckon it could become a great investment if it was done properly. What happened to that Australian consortium that was interested in taking over Charlton? That would be interesting.

You have to ask when has it worked or even been on the table? Man City ✔ Arsenal ✔ Tottenham ❌ I can't think of many others in England. There is zero appetite for major sponsorship outside of the Premier League unless games are televised worldworld every weekend. They aren't so there isn't any. If Spurs cannot get a major sponsorship deal (or turned one down) that says it all.

BUT and there is always a BUTT, lol, GFC would not be looking for 100 million pounds, we should be able to buy the right manager and the right players for a measly,20/25 million, and come on which of us (except Kangaroo Jack, who I believe earns 5 cigarettes a day and a few Aussie bucks for working on the chain gang ) , has not got that amount hid under there mattress ?

Oh Bunbury come on now, I know spending the last few years on that chain gang has ment you have missed a lot ,but surely you have heard the silly Jim Carrey saying from the movie Dumb and Dumber where he says to the girl where are you from and she says Austria, and he shoots back G'Day Mate, throw another shrimp on the barbie, and she rolls her eyes and shakes her head, lol.
You don't remember the Durex Joke from late night Saturday TV, when I think it was the " Big YIN " Billy Connolly , and he was saying he was always red faced and embarrassed and would walk around the store for ages waiting for no one to be in line at the cash register then whispered to the woman behind the counter he wanted a packet of Durex.
Then he went to Australia and was standing in line at the store waiting to pay and the guy in front of him in a loud voice said Durex please and the woman said what size and the guy said biggest you have got, and Billy C said he was all embarrassed and was calling the guy a show off under his breath that he wanted the giant size.
Then when he asked the shop keeper for Durex she said what size and he was to embarrassed to say small so said giant size please. He said that night him and his wife made love and you can't imagine the agony of taking the stick tape off his , well you know, the next morning hahaha.
I think it was BillY Connolly, it might have been someone else ,long time ago now.
Austin 1100, I thought they were just a myth, like the Unicorn, the Austin /Morris plant was on strike more days a month than they were ever working, and what they did make during that period was absolute crap, lol.
No one in there right mind would buy a First Division Team unless their hobby involved standing in the shower tearing up 100 pound notes until the drain got blocked . Look at the dope that bought Newcastle, how many millions has he pumped into that club and there might be 10 people in the whole of Newcastle who like him, and thats his immediate family , lol.
