[ 1 Oct 22 ] GILLS v Sutton Utd Match Thread

Postby Garawa » Sun Sep 25, 2022 7:29 pm

- The Gills have only met Sutton Utd on 1 occasion in their history, a 4th qualifying round FA Cup 9-3 defeat back in 1945 which remains their biggest defeat in the competition.
- Sutton had won 4 in a row at home in the league before their 2-1 loss to Salford last weekend. Away from home, however, they are yet to win with 3 defeats and a draw (a 0-0 at Grimsby) and, in all competitions, have lost 5 of their 6 on the road.
- In all competitions, Sutton have won 4 of their last 9 matches (all coming within the most recent 7 of those played) whilst the Gills have seen 4 wins spanning the last 24 league and cup games. Sutton have also, however, lost 3 of their last 4 games.
- Sutton have taken 10 leads in League 2 and only Northampton have managed more. 8 out of those 10 leads, however, have come in their 6 home league games. The Gills home win over Rochdale is their only league lad taken this season.
- The Gills have won 27 corners from their last 6 league games. Sutton won 27 from their opening 6 league games but have won 33 from the 4 since including a league-high 14 in their match with Harrogate.

(15.02) Kick Off [ 4 - 4 - 2 ]

(15.09) Morris is called upon to make a good save from the first effort of the match.

(15.16) A header from a Sutton corner is headed back away from goal before being sent to the far post. 2 Sutton players go to ground but a goal kick rather than penalty is given.

(15.17) Scott Kashket puts the ball in the net but he is offside.

(15.29) Ryan Law "scores" a lovely goal but play is brought back for a foul by Mandron.

(15.41) The Gills have the ball in the net AGAIN but it is a trio of disallowed first half goals. This time Mandron's effort is rule out after Kashket strayed offside.

(15.49) Half time 0-0

(16.06) The second half kicks off.

(16.28) A quiet second half so far comes to life as Kashket strides forward. He shoots just wide but it has taken a slight nick and it's a corner.

(16.48) MacDonald's free kick nearly goes straight in! The 'keeper gets a crucial touch and saves the follow-up shot from Adelkun, only the Gills second shot on target of the match.

(16.49) Wright forces a good save from the Sutton 'keeper.

(16.52) GOAL! Gillingham 1-0 Sutton Utd: MacDonald

(16.55) Sutton go very close, dragging a shot just wide of the goal.

(16.57) Lewis Walker has his shot saved by the 'keeper, the Gills' 6th of the game with 5 coming after the 86th minute.

(16.57) FULL TIME 1-0
