[ 8 Feb 22 ] GILLS v Cambridge Utd Match Thread

Postby Garawa » Tue Feb 08, 2022 3:17 pm

- The Gills have double the number of wins over Cambridge (12 to 6) and only 2 of the 20 meetings have ended level. Neither of those draws have been at Priestfield.
- The last 3 meetings with Cambridge have all been away from home, the last meeting at Priestfield coming back in October 1999. The Gills have won 7 of the 8 meetings at home (including the last 6) with Cambridge's only win occurring in September 1972.
- Both sides have 1 win each from the last 2 times the sides met. This was Cambridge's only win in 7 ties (a spell during which the Gills won 4 of the games) and came in a cup game meaning that the Gills are unbeaten in 5 league games dating back to 1990.
- Cambridge are winless in their last 4 league and cup games, losing their last 2 after 2 draws. These followed 5 straight wins in all competitions (including a win at Newcastle) which was part of an 8-game unbeaten run.
- The Gills have faced the most shots on target (159) in League 1, an average of 5.3 every game. Cambridge have managed 5 in their last 3 league games combined after earning 5 in each of the 3 games before them. The Gills have taken 12 shots on target in their last 3 games.
- Before kick off, 26 of Cambridge's 38 league goals had been scored in the second halves of their league games, 2 more than the Gills had scored in all of their first and second halves combined and from 1 fewer game played.

(19.46) Kick Off [ 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 ]

(20.01) A clash of heads involving Thompson causes a 4 minute stoppage. He comes on bandaged up just as the Gills put large amounts of pressure on the Cambridge goal. Masterson then goes off for a blood injury of his own.

(20.03) Kelman has a chance to score from close range but it deflects into the 'keepers hands.

(20.18) Lee has the ball at his feet on the edge of the box. 2 attempts to steal the ball fail and Lee sends a neat pass to the right and the cross goes out for a corner. As the ball comes in, Lee gets a header towards goal but there are too many white shirts to block it. A follow up is collected by the keeper.

(20.24) A Cambridge shot looks like its going wide for a goal kick but its hooked off the byline and across the face of goal at pace but just ahead of any United attackers.

(20.26) McKenzie goes on a mazy run but runs into trouble. Brophy runs into the space and sends a pass to the centre spot where a Tucker lunge misses the ball but at full stretch, the attack ends after the ball was unable to be poked home with enough pace.

(20.35) Cambridge work some good space inside the box, pulling Chapman out of position. With the goal at their mercy, a turn and shot goes high and wide.

(20.35) Half time 0-0 [ 49:01 ]

(20.51) The second half kicks off.

(21.11) Cambridge head an effort just over the bar.

(21.25) A thunderous shot from Thompson is palmed down by the 'keeper and put out for a corner by a defender.

(21.28) A ball in by the Gills slams off a Cambridge hand. No penalty given and the following ball in narrowly evades every Gills foot and goes out for a goal kick. The goal kick is taken, the Gills counter attack and Dickson-Peters goes to ground inside the box far too easily.

(21.31) Lee takes a corner, the 'keeper collects but drops it and McKenzie's shot is deflected wide for another corner.

(21.31) GOAL! Gillingham 1-0 Cambridge Utd: Oliver

(21.36) May shoots a few feet wide for Cambridge but with the left side of the Gills goal at their mercy.

(21.40) Chapman collects but spills the ball. A goal-bound certain to score comes off of Jackson's outstretched ankle on the goal-line but play is brought back for a foul on the Gills' keeper.

(21.41) FULL TIME 1-0 [ 98:33 ]

Just got back from the match; the allure of the box was too much to ignore. Mrs Lidbid came as well, her first game since 2011! She must be a lucky mascot, she’ll have to come to all home games from now on. I thought the team played really well, I haven’t seen enough games to know the strengths and weaknesses of each player but to a man they all gave everything they had tonight. Cambridge didn’t really have any clear cut chances, Gillingham only had one or two, but it was an exciting game, hard fought but also more quality football than I expected, from both sides. Gills dominated the first quarter of the game, without threatening too much, but Cambridge came back hard towards half time. I thought Gills defence was superb, tackling and heading bravely and with confidence. The second half was even to begin with but Gills got stronger and the subs seemed to galvanise the team as they went in search for the winner. It was positive to see that they were not content to settle for a draw. The atmosphere was excellent as well, particularly as Gills looked for the winner. When the goal came the whole place seemed determined to see us over the line. There were very few worrying moments. It was a really enjoyable night and honestly; if they keep playing like this I really think Gills could yet avoid the dreaded drop. COYGs!

I watched on iFollow and there were some nervy moments. We looked like we didn't quite know where some creativity would come from without Lloyd but the defence has given us confidence. Just 1 goal conceded in Harris's 3 games now after shipping 7 against Oxford. We were unlucky to lose 3-2 at Wigan after fighting back from 0-2 down and we should have beaten Shrewsbury. 3 points dropped and would only be a couple of draws away from safety. As it is, it's 5 after most fans said we were dead and buried. Key games coming up we cannot afford to let our opponents get points against us from (ie no good beating Plymouth and Bolton only to lose against Morecambe and AFC Wimbledon)!

Morecambe (A) - 4 points ahead of us
Plymouth (H)
AFC Wimbledon (H) - 5 points ahead of us
Lincoln (A) - 9 points ahead of us
Bolton (H)
Doncaster (A) - 3 points below us
Charlton (A) - 14 points ahead of us

How important is this weekends game at Morecambe, talk about a must win game for both sides, three points against Morcombe, a draw against Plymouth and a win at home the following week against a poor Wombles side ,could, with a bit of luck see out of the drop zone. Go Gills.
Someone get old Boomerang Bob on here to predict three Gills wins, for these next three games. He thinks he is so clever with three wins on the trot in the Lucky bugger game, lets see him use some of that magic on here to save the Gills from 4th Division footie next season.

PPSS, Mrs L, I knew it was not the caretaker manager or the players,it was you being at the game that done it.Three points for the Gills ,thank you Ma'am.
