Postby Garawa » Sat Jan 09, 2021 1:22 pm

- Of the 15 matches with Accrington, the Gills lead the wins 7 to 5. Accrington won the reverse fixture back in December, their first win in 6 meetings.
- Since Accrington beat the Gills 4-3 at home in January 2012, games between the sides have seen the home side win only once in 6 meetings and score a total of just 2 goals in them. The last 4 meetings have seen the home side fail to score (twice each).
- The Gills are unbeaten in their last 3 trips to Accrington (1-0, 2-0 and 1-1). These games followed large scoring defeats - 3-4 and 4-7.
- Accrington's 4-0 defeat on Tuesday came after 1 defeat in 12 games in all competitions with 8 wins during that period. They last lost at home back in September (1-4 against Oxford) and are unbeaten in 8 home games in all competitions, winning 5 of them.
- Since their last home league defeat, Accrington are unbeaten in 6 (4 wins) and have conceded just 2 goals (4 clean sheets). Their 6 home goals conceded is the fewest in the division albeit from playing home 8 matches (3 fewer than the Gills).
- Along with Blackpool, Hull and Ipswich, Accrington have kept 5 home clean sheets, the most in the division but have done so from fewer games played (8) compared with Blackpool and Hull's 9 and Ipswich's 11.
- Accrington have only been behind at home in the league for a total of 53 minutes and 204 minutes home and away, both the least amount of time in the division. When they fall behind, the lead lasts, on average 22.7 minutes, also the shortest period in League 1.

15.01 Kick Off [ 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 ]
The Gills start with new signings Lee and Slattery in the starting 11.

15.12
Poor defending by Accrington allows a second attempt for the Gills through MacDonald who slams the ball goalward and forces a good stop from the Stanley 'keeper.

15.17
MacDonald with another effort takes a deflection which swerves in the air and the 'keeper has to tip it round for a corner. The ball is sent in, glances off the top of Lee's head and just wide of goal.

15.48
GOAL! Accrington Stanley 0-1 Gillingham: Dempsey

15.50 Half time 0-1 (47:16)
The Gills have won all 6 league matches this season when leading at half time. Accrington have only been behind at the break at home twice this season, winning 1 and losing 1.

16.06
The second half kicks off.

16.10
Accrington hit the crossbar and the resulting Gills counter-attack is thwarted when their 'keeper comes out quickly to block an effort at goal.

16.23
Graham sends a free kick into the box. Any touch and its a second goal but it misses everybody and goes out for a free kick despite the Gills appeals that it took a touch of a Stanley player.

16.26
O'Connor with some excellent defending to clear a dangerous ball away for corner which Bonham punches away.

16.50
Dempsey clears a speculative cross from under his crossbar. A subsequent attack requires Bonham to match a match-winning save.

16.52
Ogilvie with a great tackle inside the box to prevent to Accrington attacker from getting a shot away.

16.54
Accrington pile on the pressure from a corner with a series of probing balls. The next attack sees an Accrington player go down. Huge cries for a penalty are waved away.

16.56
Final play of the match sees Dempsey give away a free kick just outside of the box. The shot is hit over the bar.

Gillingham stopped the rot with a well-earned win at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Kyle Dempsey struck to put the Gills deservedly ahead just before the break and that goal was enough to claim maximum points, despite a better showing from the home side after the turnaround.

Nice all round performance from the Gills, why we can't do this week in week out I have no idea.

I've been complaining for the last few weeks about playing 3 up front and how the lack of numbers in midfield means they are over-run and cannot hold possession or create scoring opportunities. Crazy considering the players we have. We played 5 in this match and the Rochdale commentators spoke about how they dominated the play and bossed the game. Finally Mr Evans, just because the EPL sides are playing 4-3-3 doesn't mean we should.

We should be playing 2,3,5, two wingers, three in the middle, forward line to include Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves and Mr Geoffrey Hurst to score in the box and out on the right wing Stevie Coppell , and on the other side maybe McManaman to put those crosses into the box, we would never come away from a match without scoring three or four goals.

A very decent result - shows what can be done when you play positively away from home; we had good possession levels and a good shots on goal count.

An acquaintance of mine was at the game in his role with the local newspaper and says the result was deserved though there was not that much in it

I didn’t expect a clean sheet, let alone a win against a decent Accrington side! Typical Gills losing to a struggling side, but beating a side that is doing well.We Put in a performance for 90 minutes, and not one half which was pleasing. Our goal was a great build up,then a nice touch for Dempsey to curl into the corner.Really good goal. They had some big chances, but luckily they couldn’t take them.Signing Lee on loan again, and getting Slattery in on loan added that bit of quality needed.

Lincoln away next, and we will need the same type of performance against the side top of the league.
Noircat Premier League Champion 2007,and 2014.Noircat FA Cup (Runner Up 2014).Promoted to the Premier League (Runner Up 2017,and 2020 in the Championship).
