[ 8 Feb 20 ] Burton v GILLS Match Thread

Postby Garawa » Wed Jan 29, 2020 7:38 pm

- The Gills just edge the wins with 6 wins to Burton's 5. There have been just 1 draw (March 2011). The away side has won 3 of the last 5 meetings - 1 for the Gills in their last trip to Burton and 1 for Albion when they came to Priestfield in August.
- The Gills only away win this season came against Accrington at the end of October. A home defeat to Rotherham followed before a sequence of 17 games in all competitions with only 2 defeats - 1 being an FA Cup defeat by West Ham.
- After winning 5 out of 6 in the league, Burton are currently winless in 3. 2 of those games were draws after previously securing 1 draw in 15 games in all competitions.
- Burton's last home league loss was a 2-0 defeat to Lincoln at the start of December (4 wins and a draw since). The Gills last away defeat was a 1-0 loss at Wimbledon at the end of November (4 draws since).
- A whopping 28 goals have been scored in the last 7 meetings between the Gills and Burton. The Gills have scored 3 or more goals in 3 of those games whilst Burton have scored 3 or more in 2 games.
- 5 of Burton's 13 home games have seen them fail to score, only MK Dons (6) had more. They have however kept 6 clean sheets in those games and only Portsmouth, Peterborough, Oxford and Lincoln managed more.
- Burton's 14 home goals in 13 games is only 1 more than Southend's 13. Their 9 conceded is the joint fewest in the league meaning Burton fans have witnessed the fewest League 1 goals. The Gills 13 away goals conceded is the fewest in League 1.
- After conceding 4 away league goals between the 64th and 70th minutes this season, the Gills haven't conceded goals after them. Their 9 second half goals conceded before kick off remains the leanest total in League 1.

15.43
Akind with an excellent chance to volley the Gills into the lead from 10 yards out but miss-hits the ball away from goal and Burton clear.

15.46 Half time 0-0

16.02
The second half kicks off.

16.14
Akinde forces a great point-blank save from 'keeper O'Hara.

16.23
Willock pulls up with a hamstring problem having just returned from a lengthy time out. Graham comes on to make his debut.

16.24
Red Card! Sarkic hacks down Ogilvie for a second time to receive a second yellow card and is sent off.

16.29
Graham causing all manner of problems. The ball falls to Lee who shoots over with the 'keeper on the ground and out of position.

16.47
Bonham makes a save and somehow blocks the follow-up at point blank range.

No excuses today, the players have had plenty of time to rest, and hopefully a lot of practise at scoring goals , lots of team talk about coming out from minute one, and looking for a win, not waiting until the 80th minute to level the score for a point.
FOUR BIG GAMES IN TWO WEEKS, that break came at just the right time for the Gills, thank you Bury, Burton away , we MUST come away with points , three would be great but I guess one is more probable ??? Blackpool who have fallen to pieces so lets seriously look at three points there, then Doncaster who seem to be able to score at will although there recent form has been up and down, then off to Southend, we should be able to mail that one in, send the reserves with Mr.L in goal, and Aussie playing up front.
I was worried that not playing for a week and a half we would find the teams below us taking our 12th spot in the table , but we are still there, and almost everyone around us in the table have played about the same number of games as the Gills.
FORTY TWO points left to play for I think, and no one above us outside the top three are exactly setting the world on fire anymore, so come on you Gills lets have three wins and lets say one draw in the next four games, we could easily be sitting in 7th or 8th place by the time we go to Sunderland.
Lets go you Gills, hell I need to start drinking again, these Heineken 00 fake beers just don't cut it , lol. GO GILLS.

Another draw, 17 shots ,only 2 on target, someone go to a London Club and borrow a goal scorer for the rest of the season, or has the owner and manager decided that this year is already done with, safe from relegation and are looking to build for a run at promotion NEXT year ?

Every sympathy with the die-hard GFC away support, It can't be a great fun-fest at the moment but I'm happy with a point.

It's a very weird scenario isn't it. I have been happy with a point in recent away games. We have a long unbeaten run (11) and all other teams had lost at least once in just the last 8 games. We are very difficult to beat yet the draws against Burton and Rochdale should almost certainly have been wins and for that reason, we are stagnant in mid-table with only 1 win on the road all season. Very peculiar situation.

The unbeaten run continues, but we failed to take advantage of the extra man,and get the win.Blackpool away tomorrow, and hopefully we can take some of the chances we have been creating.11 unbeaten, and in the top half,Hopefully we can get our second away win.

All about the haves and the have nots.
Top Six in the Table.............................last five games, a combined total of 23 wins, 3 draws and 4 loses, 72 points
Positions 7 thru 12.............................. last five games, a combined total of 9 wins, 14 draws and 7 loses, 41 points
Now convince me that letting a player like Eaves 21 league goals last season leave the Gills wasn't a mistake, we should have thrown a boat load of cash at him to keep him here. Hanlan 6 goals, Jakubiak 6 goals and Lee 6 goals are with all due respect to them ,hardly the goal scoring machine Eaves was , when your top scorers have only managed to put 6 in the back of the net each and the season is almost 70 % over I guess 12th place is about where you deserve to be. Last season with two extra games played we ended up 13th with 55 points, I think this year were going to end up with about the same number of wins 15, but with like 62/64 points but with 16 or 17 draws on the season. If just half of them say 8 draws had been wins we would sitting in a play off spot, and we have proved this year that if we had an Eaves even scoring 15 goals we would have been there playing for a place at Wembley.
Evans and Scally bought in 20 midfield players to build a defence and I guess you can say he did a good job there, we have only lost 4 games at home and 3 away, with the exception of Coventry and Fleetwood that's as good or a better record than the others in the top 6 or 7 , so I am assuming we get the forwards we need in the summer for a run at promotion next season.
Players like Maynard at Mansfield must be worth a look , Murphy at Bolton, Walker at Lincoln, there all at teams going nowhere fast , and if Scally and Evans are serious about getting in the mix next year, then these are the sort of players they are going to have to open the checkbook and pay to bring into the hallowed halls of Priestfield Road.
I feel kind of a bit depressed with the Gills all of a sudden, I can't see us making a run at a top 6 finish this year, the teams that are there now just look to good and to strong so I guess here's looking forward to a successful 20/21 season.
