The Gills have faced Portsmouth on Boxing Day not too long ago - running out 2-0 winners in 2001 thanks to goals from King and Shaw. Here's how the teams lined up that day - note the Pompey forward line (that's not OUR Steve Lovell by the way).

After being told Eaves had a slight strain on Saturday and would be back for today, he is not in the squad. Is he being saved for a move away??? We'd need to use his fee for a decent experienced replacement striker otherwise we are in trouble as neither Parker, Hanlan or List are capable of 15+ a season.

Well, what a game to choose for my debut this season! I have never seen Gills be outplayed so heavily yet win 2-0! I would hate to be one of the 1600 Portsmouth fans travelling home having witnessed that! In fairness I thought Gills managed the game quite well for the last 30 minutes, Zaukini and Holly were outstanding; not sure why Parker was MOM although his header for his goal was magnificent. List was very good as well, his run to win the penalty was superb. I may have to attend more games now!

What a great win against The best side currently in the league. To do the double and not concede in either game is fantastic.Portsmouth put a lot of pressure on,but goals change games.A goal at the end of each half was great timing.A great result on Boxing Day,let’s hope we can make it Two home wins on the bounce v Doncaster.

My Thoughts On Gillingham V Portsmouth..............

I went into this match thinking that if Gillingham can avoid defeat then this would be a decent result, and to then see the team-sheet announced at mid-day and to see Tom Eaves not named in The Match-Day Squad and Gillingham lost our last league game against Charlton Athletic At The Valley With Tom Eaves on the sidelines for one reason or another (I am sure we all have our own opinions as to why Tom Eaves is not available for selection for the past two league games now) then seeing our top goal-scorer unavailable for selection against A Portsmouth Side who are flying high in League One and Portsmouth had just won there last league game against Sunderland, then had anyone offered me a draw at mid-day before kick off, then I would have taken that, Clearly Gillingham decided to give us as supporters the perfect Christmas Present by winning against Portsmouth on Boxing Day, It was never going to be a footballing performance where Gillingham were going to play Portsmouth off the park, We needed a disciplined, cautious, professional performance, and dropping deep might have aggravated the supporters at times, because we were not defending from the front, but I don't think Gillingham could play a open expansive game against Portsmouth if we were going to earn ourselves a draw / win.

How we didn't concede at least one goal On Boxing Day I have no idea, Portsmouth dominated the vast majority of the match at Priestfield Stadium and we just had one of those days where shots that were blocked fell to A Gillingham Player and Portsmouth were wasteful with the number of chances that they had created, where as Gillingham were clinical with our chances, with Josh Parker opening the scoring for Gillingham just before half time and Callum Reilly scoring from the penalty spot just as we were entering added time, and that goal from Callum Reilly just eased our nerves a bit as well, Nathan Thompson going off injured gave Gillingham the numerical advantage for the closing stages of the match, But Portsmouth still looked capable of scoring with ten men, Sometimes you have days where things go your way, and Portsmouth not taking there chances, going down to ten men with Nathan Thompson's Injury, And Gillingham took there chances which came our way, There have been games this season where Gillingham have put in better performances and lost, and there are games where Gillingham have played a lot worse then our performance against Portsmouth and still managed to win (Slough Town A Prime Example Of This) And I think Gillingham are a much better side where we know that we're going to be in for a tough match, Supporters went into The Portsmouth match knowing that we are going to be in for a tough game, where as against Wycombe Wanderers, Players and Supporters might have gone into that match thinking - It's Only Wycombe - And Gillingham had to fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, Name recognition in-terms of the team's your up against perhaps see's players raise or lower there performance levels depending on who they are playing against.

As for the match itself, Oli Hawkins was causing Gillingham a lot of problems with his height and physical presence, Alex Lacey and Gabriel Zakuani knew they were in for a tough game going up against him, because Oli Hawkins is 6'5', But for all of Oli Hawkin's excellent work in-terms of flicking the ball on, holding the ball up and laying the ball off to a team mate and doing the unappreciated side of the game, Hawkins just couldn't just the ball into the back of the net, And here were the chances that Oli Hawkins had during the match against Gillingham On Boxing Day ONE: Ronan Curtis drives forward in possession of the ball for Portsmouth, And Ronan Curtis see's his shot blocked and then cleared by Barry Fuller on the edge of Gillingham's Penalty Area and the second ball falls kindly to Josh Parker, who managed to retain possession of the ball and pass the ball out-wide to Callum Reilly, who initially losses possession of the ball and the second ball drops kindly to Mark Byrne, and Mark Byrne passes the ball forwards to Dean Parrett, However, Dean Parrett's poor first touch allowed Gareth Evans to get on to the loose ball and Gareth Evans back-heals the ball to Ronan Curtis, who clips the ball forwards to Jamal Lowe, And Jamal Lowe tee's up Ollie Hawkins first time, and Oli Hawkins on the stretch, couldn't divert the ball on target. (But Jamal Lowe was in a great position to stick the ball into the back of the net.

TWO: Gabriel Zakuani headers Gareth Evans in-swinging cross from a corner kick partially clear and away from danger, however, Nathan Thompson passes the ball out-wide to Gareth Evans, who whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick and Jack Whatmough headers the ball back across the face of goal and Matt Clarke's mis-kicked shot turns into a pass towards Jamal Lowe, who's shot on the turn is blocked by Mark Byrne and Barry Fuller kicks the ball clear and away from danger and Gillingham survive another scare at the back as Gillingham are desperately defending our narrow one goal lead, and from the resulting throw on, Nathan Thompson throws the ball down the line and Connor Ogilvie has to kick the ball into touch at the expense of conceding another throw on, and it is from here, where Portsmouth create a golden goal-scoring opportunity, Nathan Thompson throws the ball short to Ben Thompson, who gets the ball under control before being challenged by Brandon Hanlan and Dean Parrett tries to clip the ball forwards to Josh Parker on the halfway line, But Jack Whatmough gets on to the loose ball first and Jack Whatmough runs forwards in possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Ronan Curtis, who looks to take on Barry Fuller, and Ronan Curtis see's his cross blocked by Barry Fuller and Callum Reilly kicks the ball clear and away from danger and Jack Whatmough wins the aerial challenge up against Josh Parker and the second ball falls kindly to Gareth Evans, who lays the ball off to Tom Naylor, And Tom Naylor clips a high and hanging ball down the right side of the pitch, and Ben Thompson gets the ball under control before whipping in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post and Oli Hawkins should have equalised for Portsmouth from four yards out, thankfully, from our point of view, Portsmouth have not taken the goal-scoring opportunities that they have created. AND THREE: Craig MacGillivray kicks the ball long down-field and Oli Hawkins flicks the ball on towards Jamal Lowe and Jamal Lowe lays the ball off to Ronan Curtis, And Ronan Curtis runs away from goal towards the byline down The Gordon Road Stand / Brian Moore Stand Side Of The Pitch, and Ronan Curtis manages to whip in an dangerous in-swinging cross and Oli Hawkins should have headed the ball on target and these are goal-scoring opportunities that your centre forward will be begging for in-terms of service from either flank throughout the entire match.

But to blame Oli Hawkins for Portsmouth not scoring would be harsh, even though he missed some golden goal-scoring opportunities, Because Tomas Holy had to claw Gareth Evans fantastic cross away from Oli Hawkins and Ronan Curtis as the expense of conceding a corner kick, And from the resulting corner kick, from the second ball, because Gillingham initially dealt with the corner kick, Ben Thompson whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross from The Rainham End / Gordon Road Stand Side Of The Pitch and Tomas Holy got the faintest of touches to parry the ball wide and away from goal and Barry Fuller had to prevent the ball from going behind for A Portsmouth Corner Kick.

And the chances were still there for Portsmouth to open the scoring, Craig MacGillivray kicks the ball long down-field down the left side of the pitch and Barry Fuller allows the ball to bounce which allows Ronan Curtis to get on to the loose ball, and Ronan Curtis runs away from goal and passes the ball inside to Ben Thompson, who passes the ball through to Lee Brown, and Lee Brown had made a third man run, and Lee Brown perhaps took to long to pass the ball back to Gareth Evans, and Gareth Evans shot on target ricochets off Alex Lacey and somehow the ball deflects wide of Tomas Holy's Left Hand Post, and had that ball deflected on target, then Portsmouth would have surely taken the lead.

But despite all the chances created, all the pressure on Gillingham's Goal, It Was Gillingham who opened the scoring, and scoring before half time was perfect timing, Nathan Thompson throws the ball inside to Tom Naylor in a central position on the pitch, And Tom Naylor's attempted pass over the top is intercepted by Mark Byrne And Dean Parrett takes a touch to control the ball before clipping a long ball down the line towards Elliott List, who does really well to get the ball under control with a decent first touch, and Elliott List runs towards goal before whipping in a fantastic in-swinging cross and Josh Parker headers the ball past Craig MacGillivray to give Gillingham the lead, despite the fact that Gillingham were on the back-foot for most of the first half, Josh Parker often gets criticism, sometimes justified, other-times not justified, But Josh Parker has now scored two goals in two successive home matches for The Gills.

HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-0 PORTSMOUTH

SECOND HALF:

Despite being under the cosh defensively, Gillingham eventually won themselves a free kick when Tomas Holy kicks the ball long down-field and Jack Whatmough has gone into the back of Josh Parker, and the sarcastic cheers from the home support is because Referee Nicholas Kinseley hadn't given Gillingham many favourable refereeing decisions prior to awarding this free kick, and from the resulting free kick, Gillingham could have doubled there lead, Dean Parrett whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross / shot and Craig MacGillivray had to dive at full stretch to fingertip the ball round the post to prevent Gillingham from doubling there lead, This was one of those free kicks that goalkeepers really dislike, because if no-one gets a touch on to the ball then the ball could creep into the far corner of the net, but should someone make contact, then A Gillingham Player or A Portsmouth Player defending the free kick could stick the ball into the back of the net.

Portsmouth create another decent goal-scoring opportunity as Ronan Curtis passes the ball through to Lee Brown on the over-lap and Lee Brown passes the ball back to Gareth Evans on Gillingham's Penalty Spot and Gareth Evans fires a first time effort over Gillingham's Crossbar and Gareth Evans really should have hit the target, and that was a massive let off for Gillingham - Maybe Dean Parrett had put Gareth Evans off - However, The Chances were mostly being created by the visitor's, Because Lee Brown has possession of the ball for Portsmouth and runs forward towards the halfway line and Lee Brown lays the ball off to Ronan Curtis, And Ronan Curtis runs forward in possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Tom Naylor, who carries on running towards the edge of Gillingham's Penalty Area and Tom Naylor lays the ball off to Ronan Curtis, who fires a fiercely driven effort towards goal and the ball deflects off Alex Lacey and the ball deflects into Tomas Holy's grasp.

Another Portsmouth Chance, Nathan Thompson throws the ball down the line towards Tom Naylor, who gets the ball under control before passing the ball square to Gareth Evans in an central position on the pitch, And Gareth Evans takes a touch to control the ball before firing a fiercely driven shot towards goal which was hit too cleanly and Tomas Holy was able to gather the ball by getting his entire body behind the ball.

CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM: Gillingham could have doubled there lead when Barry Fuller throws the ball long down the line and Josh Parker not only keeps the ball in play, But Josh Parker manages to fire the ball across the face of goal and the ball deflects into Billy Bingham's path and Billy Bingham's first time effort towards goal is saved by Craig MacGillivray.

Portsmouth were looking to force the issue as they knock the ball long down the left side of the pitch - Gillingham's Right - And Lee Brown takes a few touches in possession of the ball before seeing his cross charged down by Barry Fuller, and the ball ricochets into Mark Byrne's Path, And Mark Byrne takes a few touches in possession of the ball and Mark Byrne passes the ball back to Luke O'Neill, and Luke O'Neill see's his attempted clearance charged down and Barry Fuller manages to get to the loose ball first and get the ball partially clear and away from danger and Billy Bingham headers the ball on towards Josh Parker, who plays the ball over the top towards Elliott List, And Elliott List runs towards goal and manages to skillifully evade Jack Whatmough and Jack Whatmough bundles Elliott List down to the deck inside Portsmouth's Penalty Area and Referee Nicholas Kinseley points to the penalty spot straight away, and up steps Callum Reilly to stick the ball into the back of the net to double Gillingham's Lead and ease our nerves just as we go into stoppage time, because 1-0 up with five minutes to go will have given us a lot to be nervous about.

And Gillingham had the chance to make the score-line 3-0 with a few minutes to go, Barry Fuller manages to keep the ball in play and Barry Fuller was looking to slow the game down and Barry Fuller passes the ball back to Alex Lacey, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Alex Lacey kicks a high and hanging cross-field pass towards Elliott List, And Elliott List takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square to Callum Reilly on the edge of Portsmouth's Penalty Area and Callum Reilly whips a curling effort narrowly wide of Craig MacGillivray's Left Hand Post.

FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 2-0 PORTSMOUTH

OTHER MENTIONS:

Steve Lovell changed our formation when Luke O'Neill came on to replace Brandon Hanlan, Because Gillingham switched from A 4.3.3 Formation To A 4.4.2 Formation With Luke O'Neill and Callum Reilly playing on both wings, also, congratulations to Noel Mbo for making his first league appearance for Gillingham, Noel Mbo has mostly played for Gillingham In Kent Senior Cup and Football League Trophy Matches, So for Noel Mbo to make his league debut for Gillingham was a massive positive, another massive positive was the fact that Gillingham have done the double over Portsmouth and Gillingham were the first team to beat Portsmouth during The 2018 / 2019 Season, And Portsmouth were unbeaten away from home before they traveled to Priestfield Stadium on Boxing Day, Gillingham have played Portsmouth four times in 2018, and we have beaten them three times (twice at Fratton Park), and our 3-1 win at Fratton Park towards the end of the last season was Gillingham's first ever win away at Portsmouth.

Gillingham are now seven points clear of The League One Relegation Zone - Eight if you want to include goal difference - And should Gillingham manage to win against Doncaster Rovers and results go our way, then Gillingham will go ten points clear of The League One Relegation Zone.

You can tell that our squad lacks ability, understandable because just look at the players Portsmouth had on the bench on Boxing Day, Brett Pitman, Ben Close and Christian Burgess, players who know this league inside out, especially Brett Pitman, But Gillingham have had previous squads with players with better ability, but you could not fault our players for work-rate, throwing themselves in-front to block shots and putting the challenges in and one player we have got in this squad who is the perfect example of a player who puts themselves about is Barry Fuller, WHAT A SIGNING Barry Fuller has been for Gillingham This Season, When we signed Barry Fuller, I thought Luke O'Neill will start at Right Back and Barry Fuller will prove to be a valuable and experienced player off the pitch, but his contribution on the pitch has been magnificent.

We did get lucky with Nathan Thompson having to go off injured and Portsmouth went down to ten men, But Billy Bingham and Luke O'Neill both came on so that Gillingham could line up with two solid banks of four, and It was nice to see Noel Mbo come on to make his league debut, generally speaking, Gillingham tend to pick up more results when we're winning games and we have something to defend and the opposition are willing to attack, and The Portsmouth Match saw both of these examples exemplified, It's when we're a goal down or when teams come to Priestfield Stadium and play for a 0-0 draw where we struggle, because I think Gillingham are best suited to a counter attacking style, which perhaps shows why Steve Lovell is picking up more points away from home then at home under his management.

When the atmosphere got going, it was brilliant inside Priestfield Stadium On Boxing Day, I can understand the frustrations where Gillingham sat deep and we were not pressing from the front, and that includes when Portsmouth went down to ten men, But Gillingham had the lead, we opted for a cautious, disciplined, defensive display and this performance managed to earn Gillingham three valuable points, although we were fortunate that Portsmouth didn't have there shooting boots on, But we took our chances with Tom Eaves not in the match-day squad at all, And Josh Parker and Callum Reilly both got themselves on the score-sheet.

If we are looking for more positives, then Gillingham picking up four points from our last three league games is a massive positive, and beating Portsmouth can only be a boost for the players confidence levels and we couldn't have asked for anything better for A Christmas Present that A 2-0 Win against Portsmouth on Boxing Day, The challenge now is to see if we can build on this result by picking up results against Doncaster Rovers and Southend United, Because if we can do that then Gillingham's League Form will improve and we will go into The FA Cup Third Round Tie Against Cardiff City full of confidence, and we also go into that match as underdogs which will suit Gillingham down to the ground perfectly.

I went for Elliott List for MOTM, But you could have named another five or six players easily for Man Of The Match, Great celebrations at the full time whistle as well when you look at this tweet - https://twitter.com/TheGillsFC/status/1077958086156058624 - And all in all a fantastic performance, a fantastic result, and Steve Lovell has the midas touch when it comes to matches against Portsmouth, But if you compare this match to the Portsmouth Game that was live on SKY Sports A Year Ago, We looked dreadful last season, this season, we were of course defensively disciplined and cautious, but we took our chances and were trying to hit Portsmouth on the break, Hanlan and List can cause teams problems with there pace and Parker is much better playing as a central striker.

And finally - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great report, wish I had had the opportunity to read it before todays 1-3 disaster, after seeing todays result that kind of took the shine off the Portsmouth result.
