[ 15 Sep 20 ] Gills v Coventry Match Thread (EFL Cup R2)

Postby Garawa » Sat Sep 12, 2020 2:32 pm

- This is the Gills' first League Cup 2nd round appearance since the 2016/17 season when they beat Premier League Watford. It is their first 2nd round home appearance since the 2014/15 season when they lost to Premier League Newcastle.
- The Gills record in the 2nd round of the League Cup stands at 9 wins, 10 draws and 28 defeats. They have only beaten higher league opposition at home in the round 4 times (Portsmouth 2005, Barnsley 1996, Oldham 1982 and Bury 1963) and have lost 13 of the 22 ties.
- Coventry lead the wins 27 to 16 but haven't won any of the 2 meetings in the League Cup. Coventry are unbeaten in 4 meetings and have only lost 1 of the last 7 whilst the Gills are unbeaten in 6 meetings at Priestfield (4 wins).
- Neither the Gills nor Coventry have scored more than 1 goal in any of their last 3 meetings. Since a Coventry 4-1 win back in November 2015, the 6 subsequent meetings have generated a total of only 11 goals.
- Both sides have lost their opening league fixtures. Coventry's defeat at Bristol City was their first defeat in 20 games.

Why don't they play these games at say noon, when they don't need to spend money on floodlighting etc, are they making much money from selling the game on the interweb do you know ? Does it cost 10 pounds a match to watch ?

The last time Gillingham played against Coventry City In The League Cup was back in The 1996 / 1997 Season, Coventry City were A Premier League Team back then, And Gillingham won 1-0 that day, the same result tonight will do very nicely.

Yes Gillsfan. £10 per match. Many, like me, won't pay that as they missed the first half though so I guess its a balance between not too late and not too early.

Another win for the Big Blue Machine from what appears to have been a pretty boring game until the penalty shoot out, well done the Gills, now were off play who, Wolves ?

Doesn't matter how it comes but a win is a win and the record books can't say otherwise :-)

Watching the highlights and looking at the stats it's hard to see how we won that but Coventry are a decent side and it's a great result.

Really pleased with the win! Was having a couple of drinks out with my wife, and I kept checking the score seeing it was 0-1 to Coventry.I thought I would check after the game and couldn’t believe not only had we got a last gasp equaliser, but we forced penalties and won them! I read we were second best for large parts, but with the Cups as we know anything can happen.Wolves away next or Stoke which is tough.

One bad thing about last nights game is the bad injury to O’Keefe. He will be a big miss.
