Just thought, wasn't there a Dave Watson who played in blue at Everton. He could have captained them and managed them. I think he played for Scotland but could have played against them in the youth ages or a friendly or a testimonial match.

Dave Watson is correct -played for and captained Everton: was caretaker manager for a short period; 12 England caps I believe and he played for a Hong Kong Invitation X1 against England

I have just found out thanks to Google Mr Ryan Wilson captained England School Boys as a 16 yr old then changed his name to RYAN GIGGS and played International Football for Wales. Giggs also Captained Man Utd during the 2007/08 season, and then was the Interim Manager, and played against England as a Welsh International, and he didn't wear a bloody BLUE SHIRT. MY answer of Ryan Greggs is the real answer England DID NOT play a recognised International (and I know the question didn't say it had to be an International) in the build up to the Euros 96 in Hong Kong, they played a club team called Golden FC, who had just finished 3rd in the Top Flight of the Premier League ,( who Folkestone would probably beat 5-0 on a bad day) .
The teams name was changed to Golden Select XI because they had players who had played for The Crazy Gang, Manchester United, Bullen an assistant coach at Sheffield Wed, a few Bosnian and Dutch players, and one Local Chinese player, and England managed to win 1-0.
