Vote for Hessy - Prostate Cancer UK Campaign

Postby Garawa » Tue Aug 13, 2013 5:45 pm

I was asked to come up with a Gills greatest captain. Barrett and Fuller could hardly fit in that category so it was a toss up between Pennock and Hessy. I opted for Hess's short spell with the arm-band as not only would many place him as the greatest Gill but also the spell led to our greatest period in our history.

We have until the 19th to get him into the top 5 so please vote and pass to any other Gills fans you know!

Thanks

What about Jacques, Bill Williams or Dick Tydeman?

Bit before my time some of those! Not sure I was even born! It had to be someone most people could relate to and preferably where some sort of accomplishment was achieved. It was quite difficult really. I'm sure many would pick him well ahead of others from the past.

Jacques was the skipper of the 1974 promotion team who were the football leagues highest scoring team. As for recent players I take it that means us oldies are not allowed to vote. It seems players pre 1996 don't matter so why do any of us older fans bother?

Absolutely not. Firstly, the whole thing is tongue-in-cheek thing anyway. I mean, all nominated players had to be compared to a famous movie character so it's just a bit of fun (I compared Heesy to John McClane from Die Hard, always being a thorn in the opposition side, always with a dour expression and could be found before a match wearing a vest).
Secondly, I literally was asked a day or two before it was required. I was born in 1976 so I cannot possibly comment on a player from 1974! It can be argued that 1999-2005 HAS to be our greatest time in our history what with our first win at Wembley and highest ever finish in the league so Hessy was surely a shoe-in for that!
Thirdly, as "older fans" you have the luxury of knowing the old AND the new players so still can associate with the likes of Hessy anyway.

Yes more younger fans are likely to vote for a player they know but when it is arguably one of (if not) the greatest player in our history I don't see much of an issue really. And as it is meant to raise more awareness of Prostate Cancer isn't that the point?

It's a good cause not a personal insult.
All done.
