Gills sign another defender

Postby Garawa » Tue Aug 15, 2017 4:44 pm

Ben Nugent joins having left Crewe in the summer, not sure why he wasn't picked up somewhere as his stats are for a decent defender and who scores goals too. I guess, as an out-and-out centreback, I guess Ehmer's place is in jeopardy. I like Ehmer, I thought he came on a lot when given the captaincy yet a few months later, in a stable defence, he suddenly appears to be a liability. Maybe he thrives better under immense pressure!

Another big lad at 6ft 5! A Crewe fan said he is decent, but can give away the odd penalty. The defence looks sorted now.Ehmer could drop out the squad, but i`m sure he will be needed during the season.

I agree. You can see a red card whilst Zakuani is away on international duty and that would be 2 centre-backs gone even without a single injury!

http://www.crewe.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=471484

I found this article on The Crewe Alexandra Vital Forum About Ben Nugent.

Reasons why he must start include; he is a vocal player (a leader of men), not afraid to get stuck in, he gives 110% each game, his aerial ability is better than our current centre backs, he has more experience at a higher level than our current centre backs, and the list goes on. Wording it simply, I believe a player with Nugent's ability and leadership skills should be starting. At any league two club. He has some experience at Championship level and bags of it at lower league (1 and 2) level, that is a huge bonus to any club. The fact he won the Cardiff City Young Player of the Year Award, in the season they won promotion to the hallowed land of the Premier League, shows he can more that cut it at Championship level. Therefore it is obvious he can in the old fourth division. The issue is, he hasn't been given the chance to. In my opinion, as you have probably gathered, Nugent should be the first name on the team sheet.

I have also quoted the final paragraph which makes for interesting reading.
