I have been working on a blog which goes in-depth about the weaknesses of The Diamond Midfield Formation - I hope you will enjoy reading this.

Interesting. We definitely need to shake things up a bit as we are being found out. With Dack pushing forward and another holding, it is leaving acres of space in midfield with just 2 players to fill the void and we are losing possesion in these areas, often having to find a foot hold in the game or even chase and tire the opposition into giving away a chance or two to exploit. Far too often now we have struggled at the start of the game, gone a goal down and then came back into the match. And far too often also have we looked very much second best when at the start of the season we looked unstoppable.

4-2-3-1 is the only option for me to try and catch the opposition out and give us a man extra in midfield. I'd put Hessy and Wright in there with Wright dropping into the back 4 for cover. Dack central in front with McGlashan and Dickenson on the flanks so to speak. The extra pace they have might push the opposition deeper rather than finding the large gaps in the middle of the park. The only trouble with that is we just don't do well with one striker. I totally disagree with the experts who claim it is a 4-3-3 formation as rarely are these strikers, it is a 4-5-1. Alternatively it may be worth a try at 3-5-2 with Oshilaja, Egan and Ehmer at the back and Wright dropping in when needed to make a 4. A 4 man midfield in front of that of Dickenson, Hessy, Dack and McGlashan/Jackson would leave room for 2 up front. The only trouble with that is that Dack would be further back and not as free to roam.......unless he plays striker!

Gosh- and there's me thinking it was a game where you kicked the ball as hard as you could towards your opponent's goal and scored more than they do!

Nope, that game was replaced in the 80s! lol. I'd love to know how a modern side would play the old fashioned 2-3-5 formation!

I would still line my subuteo men line up with five forwards, three midfielders and two defenders!

Ha ha. Ok, let's pick a Gills side with it then:

Almost right, except Egan is more of a Centre Half than Wright so he should be in the middle. Cody would be more of an inside forward so swap with Samuel, or perhaps, dare I say it, Norris should be Centre Forward with Cody or Samuel as inside forwards. Incidentally Mr Lidbid, I would line my Subbuteo team up in 4-3-3 as was popular in my youth. Dunno about diamonds and 3-5-1-2 and all that, because I don't care how they line up as long as we get more goals than the other lot.

Interesting. I loved watching Match of the 70s from 20 years ago or so (that should be repeated) and old footage is fantastic. Amazing how times change and how different certain players can be as formations evolve. I wonder how we will view current ones in 20 years time!
