Is John Egan irreplaceable?

Postby Garawa » Tue May 10, 2016 12:42 pm

It looks as if he is likely to leave so is he too good?! He has been immense. He isn't the fastest and defensively I don't think he is any better than Ehmer has been in the latter half of the season. His goal-scoring ability (11 in 92), his reading of the positions, his tackling and his leadership abilities are however superb. Clearly we would miss those and won't find someone quite like that without paying out for one and El-Abd proved that a more traditional defender could do a similar (if not better) job as long as he has a more mobile partner. So what are your thoughts? Would we miss Egan more than simply a few extra goals?

Trying to think logically and rationally on this one!

I like Egan, and he is very much like Aidan Flint of Bristol City who gets about 5-6 goals a season from CB.I would like him to stay, but I do feel he is replaceable as when he was injured El-Abd stepped in and we kept 5/6 clean sheets.El-Abd then got injured and Egan returned, and we ended up conceding two goals every game.El-Abd certainly made us more solid, and his experience and constant talking really helped the defence.I would sign him if we can and make him Captain. He`s not really rated at Bristol City so they may let him go if we show an interest.

If John Egan were to leave Gillingham Football Club and sign for A Championship Club, then I would be sad to see John Egan go, but I would wish him all the best.

When we signed John Egan, he was released without making A First Team Appearance for Sunderland, I am sure there are plenty of Academy and First Year Professionals who would love to sign for Gillingham, as these players get to 19, 20, 21 and they want to be playing competitive first team football and playing for three points every week.
